Plumheaded Parakeets!!!!

These are Baby Plumheaded Parakeets...they are 1 week old at this point. When they are born they are smaller than your thumb and totally naked. No down, No feathers!!! As you can see from the picture, the grey area is where the first feathers will start to come in.

Below picture was taken 3 days later...as you can see they are starting to change quickly.....

Again, the next picture below they are almost 2 weeks old. These babies develope rapidly. They almost double in size every couple of days.

My how these babies are growing!!! At this point they are almost 3 weeks old.
There heads are starting to get gray feathers on them....

Mom. with  her babies...This was an unusual clutch. She hatched out 4 babies all healthy!!! Usual size clutch for Plumheads is 3 maximum. Notice that the female has a blue head and a yellow ring around her neck area. Males have a bright red
head and a black ring around their neck.

Being able to capture this next picture was quite a rare treat...Mom feeding her babies. Most plumheads are flighty birds and don't like any intruders in the nest.

The Plummies are now 4 weeks old...They are starting to look like baby birds....I am going to take them for hand feeding so that they can be tamed down for pet quality....I have handled them almost every day since they were born so that they are going to be easier to hand feed and tame.

Below are pictures of the Plummies  almost 1 year later....I can pretty much tell from the color of the beaks that all of them are males..They still should be DNA sexed just to be sure....Plummies love to hang upside down for some unknown reason. Fig parrots are the same way...

Plummies are not easy to breed...it takes patience and time. They do not mature until they are between 2 1/2  and  3 years of age. They are high energy birds that require high energy food and at least 4 to 5 feet long flight cages to breed in.
